California Republic — Bear Flag of California
The California Bear Flag traces its origins to the short-lived California Republic of 1846, when American settlers in Alta California revolted against Mexican rule during the Bear Flag Revolt. The grizzly bear symbolised strength and independence, while the single red star was inspired by earlier Californian independence movements. After California joined the United States, the design evolved into the official state flag in 1911. Today, the Bear Flag remains one of the most recognisable symbols of the American West and California’s frontier identity.
