Canadian Maple Leaf Tee — Vintage Red Flag All-Over Print Shirt
The national flag of Canada — often called the “Maple Leaf” or “l’Unifolié” — was officially adopted on 15 February 1965 after years of debate over creating a uniquely Canadian national symbol independent of British colonial imagery.
The design consists of two vertical red bands flanking a white central field bearing an eleven-point red maple leaf. The red and white colours were declared the official colours of Canada by King George V in 1921. The maple leaf itself had already been used for generations by Canadian soldiers, sporting teams, and national organisations long before becoming the official flag emblem.
Before 1965, Canada largely used the Canadian Red Ensign, which featured the Union Jack and reflected the nation’s British imperial heritage. The adoption of the modern maple leaf flag marked a shift toward a more distinct Canadian national identity during the post-war era.
Today, the flag is recognised worldwide as a symbol of Canada’s federation, wilderness, resilience, bilingual heritage, and independent nationhood.
