Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac
Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac
A steadfast shepherd of the Catholic Church and one of Croatia’s most revered religious figures, Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac (1898–1960) stood firm in defence of faith, conscience, and human dignity during one of Europe’s darkest eras.
Serving as Archbishop of Zagreb throughout the turmoil of the Second World War and the rise of Communist Yugoslavia, Stepinac became a symbol of spiritual resistance. Refusing to submit the Church to political control, he was arrested, tried, and imprisoned by the communist regime in a trial widely condemned by international observers.
Today, he is remembered by many Croatians as a martyr for religious freedom, a defender of the persecuted, and a national icon whose courage inspired generations. In 1998, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, bringing global recognition to his legacy.
