Cecil Rhodes (1853–1902) was one of the most influential—and controversial—figures of the British Empire. A mining magnate and founder of De Beers, Rhodes built vast wealth from the diamond fields of southern Africa and used it to expand British control across the region.

As Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, he pursued aggressive imperial expansion, with territories such as Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe and Zambia) bearing his name. His vision was unapologetically imperial: to extend British rule, culture, and power across Africa.

Rhodes’ legacy remains deeply contested. To some, he represents ambition, strategy, and empire-building on a grand scale. To others, he symbolises exploitation, racial hierarchy, and the harsh realities of colonial rule. His life stands as a stark example of how power, wealth, and ideology can shape nations—and divide historical judgment.
