The national flag of Thailand, known locally as the Thong Trairong (“Tricolour Flag”), is one of the most recognisable banners in Southeast Asia. Officially adopted in 1917 during the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), the design reflects the three pillars of Thai society: Nation, Religion, and Monarchy.

The red stripes symbolise the blood and sacrifice of the Thai people, the white stripes represent purity and Buddhism — the spiritual heart of the kingdom — while the broad central blue stripe honours the Thai monarchy. Blue was also associated with solidarity amongst Allied nations during the First World War, which Thailand entered in 1917.

Unlike many nations in the region, Thailand was never formally colonised by a European power, making the flag a proud emblem of independence, continuity, and national identity. Clean, bold, and timeless, the Thai tricolour remains a powerful symbol seen across temples, military parades, royal ceremonies, and the streets of Bangkok alike.
