The Dutch tricolour is one of the oldest national flags still in use today, with origins tracing back to the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule in the 16th century. The original “Prince’s Flag” used orange, white, and blue — colours associated with William the Silent and the House of Orange.

Over time, the orange stripe gradually evolved into red, creating the modern Dutch flag officially adopted in 1937. The banner became a symbol of Dutch independence, maritime power, trade, and national identity during the rise of the Dutch Golden Age.
