Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub — known in the West as Saladin — was the legendary Muslim ruler who united much of the Islamic world during the 12th century and became one of the most respected military leaders of the medieval era.
Founder of the Ayyubid dynasty, Saladin is best remembered for recapturing Jerusalem in 1187 following the Battle of Hattin, a decisive victory during the Crusades that reshaped the balance of power in the Holy Land. Renowned for his discipline, leadership, and strategic brilliance, he earned admiration from both allies and enemies alike, including many of his Christian rivals.
