Iranian Flag — Lion of Persia & Revolution 🇮🇷

The modern flag of Iran was officially adopted on 29 July 1980 following the Iranian Revolution, though the green, white, and red colours have represented Persia and Iran for generations.

The three horizontal colours symbolise:

🟩 Green — growth, hope, nature, and Islam.

⬜ White — peace, honesty, and freedom.

🟥 Red — courage, sacrifice, and strength.

At the centre is the red emblem of the Islamic Republic, designed to resemble both the word “Allah” and a tulip — a historic Persian symbol honouring those who died for the nation.

Along the borders between the colours, the phrase “Allahu Akbar” (“God is Greatest”) is repeated 22 times in Kufic script, representing the date of the Islamic Revolution in the Iranian calendar.

Before 1979, Iran’s most famous national symbol was the Lion and Sun of Persia, used for centuries under Persian dynasties and widely associated with imperial Iran and Persian civilisation.

The Iranian flag today stands as one of the most recognisable symbols of the Middle East — carrying layers of Persian history, revolution, faith, and national identity.
