Jordan — Banner of the Hashemites
The national flag of Jordan was officially adopted in 1928 and is deeply rooted in the history of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. Its colours derive from the historic Pan-Arab banner and represent major Islamic caliphates and dynasties that shaped the Arab world across centuries.
The black stripe symbolises the Abbasid Caliphate, the white represents the Umayyad Caliphate, and the green honours the Fatimid Caliphate. The red triangle stands for the Hashemite dynasty and the Arab Revolt led by Sharif Hussein bin Ali.
At the centre of the triangle is the white seven-pointed star, commonly interpreted as representing the seven verses of Al-Fatiha — the opening chapter of the Qur’an — as well as unity among the Arab peoples.
Today, the Jordanian flag stands as a symbol of Arab heritage, monarchy, resilience, and the enduring identity of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
