Sweden — The Nordic Cross
The national flag of Sweden is one of the oldest continuously used national flags in Europe. Featuring a golden Scandinavian cross upon a deep blue field, the design reflects the shared Nordic cross tradition seen throughout Scandinavia, symbolising the historical Christian heritage of the region.
The earliest recorded use of the Swedish blue-and-yellow banner dates back to the 16th century during the reign of King Gustav Vasa, though the colours themselves originate from the medieval Swedish coat of arms. According to legend, the golden cross was inspired by a divine vision seen before battle during the Swedish Crusades into Finland.
The current form of the flag was officially standardised in 1906 following the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway. Today, the Swedish flag stands as a symbol of Nordic identity, monarchy, independence, maritime tradition, and the long historical continuity of the Swedish kingdom.
