The national flag of Tunisia traces its origins to the 19th century during the rule of the Ottoman Beys of Tunis, with the modern design officially standardised in 1831. Its deep red field reflects the historic influence of the Ottoman Empire across North Africa, while the white disc represents peace and unity.

At the centre sits the red crescent and five-pointed star — long-standing symbols associated with Islam and the wider Islamic world. The star’s five points are often interpreted as representing the Five Pillars of Islam, while the crescent symbolises faith, renewal, and continuity.

Tunisia itself carries one of the oldest civilisational legacies in the Mediterranean world, being the heartland of ancient Punic Wars Carthage before later Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and French rule. Today, the Tunisian flag stands as a symbol of sovereignty, Islamic heritage, and the enduring national identity of the Tunisian republic.
