Uruguay — The Sun of May
The national flag of Uruguay was officially adopted in 1830 following the country’s independence from Brazil and the collapse of earlier regional conflicts in the Río de la Plata. Its design was inspired partly by the flag of the United States, using horizontal stripes to represent the original departments of the new republic.
The most distinctive feature is the “Sun of May” in the canton — a golden sun with a human face symbolising liberty, revolution, and the birth of independence in South America. The emblem references the May Revolution of 1810, which helped ignite the liberation movements against Spanish colonial rule across the continent.
The white field represents peace and honesty, while the blue stripes symbolise the nation’s original administrative divisions and its place among the independent republics of the Americas. Today, the Uruguayan flag stands as a symbol of republicanism, independence, and the enduring identity of one of South America’s oldest democracies.
